Pokemon Soul Silver, in game save impossible to save over
I keep reading the boards about issues similar to this,
I may simply be not understanding everyone's terminology
when users try to explain either what their issues are
or when other people attempt to help them fix them.
However my issue is this.
Played through Soul Silver, Emulator saved before i go in to fight Lance.
After i win the fight the game resets, i haven't saved in game since maybe halfway through.
Go back to Emulator save (I.E. Quick save as i call it normally) and attempt to in game save...
Get this - "There is already a saved game file. It is impossible to save. Please refer to the instruction booklet for details
Press Up + SELECT + B Button on the title screen if you want to erase the current saved game file."
which i have come to understand that this may be what people are meaning by corrupt?
and if so im hearing things like
change the save file to .dsv
well playing around in the save folders the only sort of save file that is there is the Emulators save file (as to be expected)
and its named a .dss file type. changing it to .dsv confuses me.
past this they say to start the game over and save when first possible to create a fresh in game save state.
i did this
then to load your .dsv save file. --which as i said earlier would be an emu save file not in game.
anyway continue to do this and im back in the elite four and attempting to save gets me the same message.
I have a feeling this emu save file will only get this far in the game since it cant create an in game save properly and will always reset the game after i beat the elite 4 lol.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
Also sorry if any of this is unclear or messy looking, I tend to write things late at night when im pretty tired.

Re: Pokemon Soul Silver, in game save impossible to save ove
Ok lets fix terminology first.
Savestate- this is a save made using the emulator, a save that can be made anywhere at anytime. This is a save a normal DS playing the same game can not make.
Cartridge save (sometimes called a backup save or ingame save)- this is a save just like what a nintendo DS would make when you choose to save in a game.
.dss are savestate files .dsv are cartridge save files you can not name one to the other they are different things.
the important question I do understand from you is
Do you want to keep playing the same game from when you beat the elite 4?
Do you want to play a brand new game that has no ties to beating the elite 4?

Re: Pokemon Soul Silver, in game save impossible to save ove
What in trying to accomplish is getting a .dsv save file on my current game. In the .dss save state I have gotten pretty far and have been playing the game along side my girlfriend so I'd really like to be able to continue the adventure. I won't be able to do that until I can get a proper dsv.
I have a feeling that I'm at the point that I'd have to start over

You want to save normally to be able to proceed to Kanto, right?
Since you are playing with savestates, did you saved at least once on THIS playthrough? Probably your normal save belong to another playthrough, and Pokémons generally allow you to start a new game without deleting your save, but they block saving until you erase it.
Deleting your .dsv save, loading the savestate and then saving should do the trick. At least it worked here.

I can't find any .dsv save file to start. If I in game reset I have 5 badges or something. I delete it and start a new game save asap and the reload the emulators quick save and of course since the emu save state remembers me not being able to save then I continue to have the same issue. So I guess we start with where do I find the .dev to save?

Battery saves (.dsv) are on /DraStic/backup. Load the game, load the savestate, swap to a file browser and delete the SoulSilver .dsv on this folder. Swap back to Drastic and do a battery save.

Re: Pokemon Soul Silver, in game save impossible to save ove
K so playing around with this a bit I went into my save file that I wanted then soft reset to get to the .dsv save file saved to make sure that one still could. I then went into the backup folder and deleted the .dsv . I went back to the game and saved again to watch it populating that file to ensure that's what I'm deleting, sure enough it came back so I confirmed that it's saving my .dsv files there as intended. I delete it once more and reload my .dss save file attempt a save and it still gives me the "impossible to save due to a save file already there"
It feels like the .dss save file I want to keep thinks it still has a .dsv file even though it's not actually checking for one or something . My .dsv file is empty

Well, now I don't know. I did exactly what I said to you, and I'm playing SoulSilver right now (7~8 badge). It worked perfectly.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in, but for now keep a backup and wait.

Re: Pokemon Soul Silver, in game save impossible to save ove
The only thing I can think of is to maybe link a download of my .dss save file to see if you or someone who gets a hold of it can fix it. But I know people get weary with downloads from another person on the internet. Although you would be able to see the file type I'd suppose so that makes things less fishy. :/ it's pretty sucky to know (at least I get it now I think) how to fix it and it still isn't doing anything. If my .dsv wasn't so far from where I'm at now I'd be fine starting over but I have a lot done on this save lol.
