I never owned or tried track mania so thanks for letting me know. As for New Super Mario Brothers I am not sure if it is really 3d or just clever use of sprites to look kinda 3d. Basically not sure if it is handled with 3d models or just with classic 2d sprites.

You could say its 2.5D, when its in world map its 3D that's how I see it from my perspective.

It is less about how it looks and more about hownit is generated. Final Fantasy 7 or 8 or even 9 would be a great example. The character models were made up of polygons and were full 3d. The backgrounds in a lot of areas looked 3d but were not 3d at all. It was just clever use of perspective and very nicely drawn art. I mean wolfenstien 3d itself is not actually 3d but 2.5d or pseudo 3d.

Now New Super Mario Brothers could be like blazblue, street fighter 4/5, or ssmb. With fully 3d models for the characters/scenery pieces or it could just be clever artwork that makes it look that way. To the end user it generally does not matter, but it is something I have always had an interest in and it does change how some high rez emulator options effect graphics.

I don't use the crappy built in illegal emulators... Plus, like I said Exophase definitely deserves my money :)

Correct. Gameplay wise, it's 2d. But the graphics are a mix of 3d polygons and 2d sprites. While for some reason I thought everything was 3D, I've looked at it again and the backgrounds are clearly 2d, as are most of the objects including the enemies. Mario himself is 3d, as are some of the powerups and the bigger coins. It's really easy to tell what's 3d, because it increases in clarity when you enable the high res 3d rendering, while everything else stays the same.

Nice to know I had mot played it yet in drastic let alone with the high res option so I was unsure how it was done. So it is basically like super smash bros or street fighter 4/5 them with poly characters and 2d backgrounds. Thanks for the info.

I apologise for questioning you, I didn't mean to target you or anything but just reading a thread about it made me curious that's all. :)

So it's clever use of perspective, both of you nailed the explanation. :)
