How do I open the game and play it as if I just turned on a DS? All I seem to be able to do is use the Drastic quick save feature in which it just throws me right back in the game. I don't know how to open the backup save.

Just press 'load new game', select the game and press 'start game' on the next screen.
You should then be able to load the in-game save from the game's own menu.
