They're different types of filters that change how the image is upscaled. The algorithms involve a mix of interpolating colors and trying to reconstruct diagonal lines. The actual explanation for how they're different is pretty technical. Wikipedia describes the scale2x and hq2x algorithms and has some example images:

IMO I like HQX2 because it also upscales 3D graphics in a way (LovePlus looks a little better)

I like it too it seems to look the best out of all but it slows down my speed in some cases so i use the linear option...
Maybe i need a better gpu i guess lol

A noob question, does the real ds use any kind of filter or not i cant compare graphics since i dont own a ds without any filter the image looks bad and a real ds would not look like that so i wonder if ds is using any filter
