Start button won't work

Whenever i press the start button it darkens like i pressed it, but nothing happens! with every game i play! anyone who has played pokemon knows it's impossible to play without it! please help.

The start button is used for nothing in Pokemon...

to access your bag for HMs and TMs? you need those to move farther in the game.

Um...Its the 'X' button to access menus. If u havent figured it out already
