Start button won't work in pokemon. Can't bring up menu

Hi, I just bought Drastic, and maybe I'm missing something, but I'm trying to open up the start menu in pokemon diamond and heart gold, but it won't work. When I press X or Y nothing happens, the game just carries on. Thanks for any help..
