If you use Linux just search Pinta, its very similar.
I don't have Linux, and Paint.Net didn't really work for me.
I need to re-organize the pieces of the photo so that they form a d-pad. any ideas on what works best for that?

Paint dot net can do that fine. Not really any other tool that is easier to use

Yeah but I couldn't figure out how to do that.
Could you just do it for me or show me how to do it?

While Kaikun97's working on the D-pad (Thank You!), I've been working on the other buttons. I'm using a copy of the Simple skin as a template, and recoloring them to better match Minecraft. I also decorated the buttons with Minecraft tools and words (shout-out to http://www.textcraft.net for the Minecraft text!), and their placement is based on the console version controls (for example, the R2 button usually lets you attack, so I added a diamond sword to the R button). I've already tested the skin so far in my own copy of DraStic, and it looks great.

Please expect the full skin in a day or two!

Hey what scale are the low-res controls? (AKA what should I downscale the controls I made to?)

Thanks. I'll shade the controller buttons for when they're pressed
