There are also some tools that can decrypt ROMs, although I haven't used them personally. It's weird that the patch encrypted the ROM in the first place.

It's possible it varies from device to device. Another possibility is that the game does something with the microphone gain (amplification) setting, which I'm currently not doing anything with. I'll check if that's the case. It may be helpful if one of the posters in this thread is available to beta...
